Which Documents Do You Need To Sell Car to An Auto Wrecker?
Most sales need three things: photo ID, evidence that you own the car or can sell it, and the details Transport WA needs if the car is still licensed. A written receipt isn’t always required by law, but it’s the best record you can keep.
Here’s what each document does.

Why does a Perth wrecker need proof of ownership?
A wrecker needs proof of ownership because it is about to pull the car apart. It can’t undo that if the car turns out to belong to someone else. Without proof of ownership, car wreckers have no safe way to know the seller has the right to sell.
Good proof includes the original purchase receipt or bill of sale, a letter from your lender confirming the loan is paid off, or insurance papers in your name. The more of these you have, the smoother the sale.
Your ID is the other half. A Perth wrecker will usually want the name on your driver’s licence or passport to match the name on your other papers. If you’ve changed your name since buying the car, bring something that links the two, such as a marriage certificate.
What do vehicle registration papers prove?
Vehicle registration papers show who Transport WA has recorded as responsible for the car. They don’t always prove who legally owns it.
In WA, “rego” is officially called a vehicle licence. According to Transport WA’s guidance on competing ownership claims, a licence document doesn’t necessarily prove ownership. Under WA law, the licence holder is the person entitled to have the car and responsible for licensing and insurance. That isn’t the same as owning it.
Here’s an example. Sam’s car is licensed in his mum’s name, but Sam paid for it. The papers show his mum. To sell, Sam needs either his mum involved or papers showing the car is really his.
So keep your vehicle registration papers handy, but don’t treat them as your only proof.
How do you transfer vehicle ownership in WA?
According to Transport WA’s for vehicle sellers, you must tell the department within 7 days that you’ve sold a licensed car. You also need to give the buyer’s name and address. If you miss the deadline, a penalty applies. Transport WA is the public name of the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure.
Transferring online through DoTDirect
Most people can transfer vehicle ownership in WA online through DoTDirect. You’ll need the sale date, the selling price, the plate number and the buyer’s name and address. Once you’ve submitted these, keep the confirmation as your record that the notice was lodged on time.
Using the MR9 form
Some transfers can’t be done online. These include:
- deceased estates
- jointly owned cars
- company-owned cars
- cars with optional plates
- cases where the seller, buyer or vehicle details don’t match the records
In those cases you use the MR9 form. You lodge the blue seller’s copy within 7 days. You give the red buyer’s copy and the current licence papers to the buyer. Transport WA then gives the buyer 14 days to complete its side.

What if the car is unregistered or the licence has expired?
You can still sell an unregistered car to a wrecker. Because there’s no licence to transfer, your proof of ownership matters even more.
Transport WA treats a licence that has been expired for more than 15 days as unlicensed. Only currently licensed vehicles can be transferred.
If the licence is still current and you’d rather cancel it, you can hand the plates back to a Transport WA service centre or regional agent, or post them in. You can then apply to Transport WA for a refund of the unused licence fees, counted from the date the plates are returned.

What if the car is not registered in your name?
If the car isn’t in your name, you’ll need papers showing you have the right to sell it. What counts depends on your situation.
Jointly owned cars
Only one owner can be the nominated licence holder in WA, even when two people own the car. That means the papers may show just one name. It’s sensible to get the other owner’s written agreement before selling, so nobody can later claim the sale happened without them. Remember that jointly owned transfers have to go through the MR9 form, not DoTDirect.
Deceased estates
Transport WA asks for:
- a Declaration of Deceased Estate (E172) form
- a death certificate
- the will or letters of administration
- ID showing your authority to act for the estate
This transfer can’t be done online. A Grant of Probate isn’t always required, so get legal advice if you’re unsure whether you need one.
Power of attorney or business-owned cars
Someone holding an enduring power of attorney over a person’s finances can sell that person’s car. Certified copies of the power of attorney must go with the MR9 form. Company transfers can’t be done online either. If you’re selling a business vehicle, bring evidence that you’re allowed to act for the business.
Finance owing or ownership disputes
According to WA Consumer Protection’s guide to privately selling a vehicle, a $2 PPSR check shows whether money is owed on a car or whether it has been written off. Any loan must be paid out before the sale, and lenders can often help arrange this. Ownership disputes are civil matters that Transport WA can’t settle, so sort them out before selling.

What should you do before handing over the car?
Before handing over the car, check that your papers match, get a receipt and lodge your seller notice.
Start by making sure the names, plate number and VIN on your papers match each other and the car itself. Take out your personal belongings, and remove the number plates if the wrecker asks you to.
Next, get a written receipt showing the date, time, price, plate number or VIN, and the business name. Keep a copy, along with a photo of any signed paperwork.
Finally, lodge your seller notice the same day if you can. Then contact your insurer about cancelling the policy.
